Dr. Spierings is a physician, clinical professor, and founder of MedVadis Research, based just outside Boston, Massachusetts. For more than 40 years Dr. Spierings has been dedicated to understanding headache and treating headache patients effectively. MedVadis Research is a clinical trial research facility focused on headache, migraine, and chronic pain.
Dr. Spierings considers his work in clinical trial research as part of his goal to advance headache treatment. His involvement with clinical trial research began in 1980 while a neurology resident at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. When he moved to Boston in 1986 Dr. Spierings became the director of The Headache Research Foundation, an affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine. In the late 1980s, Dr. Spierings worked on the first triptan that came on the market in 1991 to treat migraine, known as Imitrex®.
In addition to his clinical trial research at MedVadis, Dr. Spierings treats patients at Tufts Medical Center, where he’s been the Director of the Headache and Face Pain Program since 2012. Dr. Spierings is also a clinical Professor of Neurology and Craniofacial Pain at Tufts University’s Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine. From 1999 to 2014, Dr. Spierings was an Associate Clinical Professor of Neurology at Harvard University Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital
When Dr. Spierings takes time off he enjoys playing jazz or blues on the electric guitar and horseback riding at a local stable.
