Egilius L.H. Spierings, M.D., Ph.D.

Founder, Medical Director, and Principal Investigator

Dr. Spierings is a pharmacologist and neurologist, former clinical professor, and founder of MedVadis Research, based just outside Boston, Massachusetts. For more than 40 years, he has been dedicated to understanding headaches and treating headache patients effectively. He established MedVadis Research as a clinical-trial research center focused on headaches, including migraine, and chronic pain.‍

‍Dr. Spierings considers his work in clinical-trial research part of his commitment to advance headache care. His involvement with clinical trial research began in 1980 while a neurology resident at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. When he moved to Boston in 1986, Dr. Spierings became the director of The Headache Research Foundation, an affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine. In the late 1980s, he worked on the first triptan known as Imitrex®, which came to market in 1991 to treat migraine headaches acutely.‍

‍In addition to his clinical-trial research at MedVadis and until recently, Dr. Spierings treated patients at Tufts Medical Center, where he was the director of the Headache and Face Pain Program. In addition, he was a clinical professor of neurology and craniofacial pain at Tufts University Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine. From 1999 to 2014, Dr. Spierings was an associate clinical professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In October 2019, he and MedVadis Research joined Boston Advanced Medicine, where he continues his research and serves as medical director of the Greater Boston Headache Center.

Dr. Spierings has authored more than 300 medical and scientific publications and lectured extensively, nationally and internationally. His recently released book, HEADACHES: Why You Have Them – What You Can Do About Them, published by Fulton Books, he wrote for the patient or, broadly, the lay audience. Its foundation is half a century of researching and treating headaches, providing insight to patients and guidance to physicians and other healthcare practitioners alike.
