Egilius L.H. Spierings, M.D., Ph.D.
Founder, Medical Director, and Principal Investigator
Dr. Spierings is a physician, clinical professor, and founder of MedVadis Research, based just outside Boston, Massachusetts. For more than 40 years, Dr. Spierings has been dedicated to understanding headache and treating headache patients effectively. MedVadis Research is a clinical trial research center focused on headache, including migraine, and chronic pain.
Dr. Spierings considers his work in clinical trial research as part of his goal to advance headache treatment. His involvement with clinical trial research began in 1980 while a neurology resident at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. When he moved to Boston in 1986 Dr. Spierings became the director of The Headache Research Foundation, an affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine. In the late 1980s, Dr. Spierings worked on the first triptan known as Imitrex®, that came on the market in 1991 to treat migraine.
In addition to his clinical trial research at MedVadis, Dr. Spierings treats patients at Tufts Medical Center, where he’s been the director of the Headache and Face Pain Program since 2012. Dr. Spierings is also a clinical professor of neurology and craniofacial pain at Tufts University Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine. From 1999 to 2014, Dr. Spierings was an associate clinical professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
When Dr. Spierings takes time off, he enjoys playing jazz or blues on the electric guitar and horseback riding at a local stable.
Jack Jaffe, M.D., Ph.D.
Clinical Research Investigator
As a clinical research investigator, Dr. Jaffe works directly with MedVadis Research volunteers and supervises the work of the clinical research coordinators. He conducts the physical examinations and reviews the results of laboratory blood testing and reads the ECGs performed by the coordinators.
Dr. Jaffe holds a Ph.D. in physics from MIT and an M.D. from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He began in medicine as a research fellow in medical physics at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy. After medical school, he completed his medical residency at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
In addition to Internal and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Jaffe’s training and experience is in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He has held clinical and faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School, Metro West Medical Center, and Tufts University School of Medicine’s St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.
Idara Ndon, B.S.
Clinical Research Regulatory Coordinator
Idara Ndon oversees all aspects of the MedVadis Research trials. She works collaboratively with Institutional Review Boards, pharmaceutical company representatives, and our MedVadis team to ensure a work environment that complies with government regulations.
Idara joined the MedVadis team as the clinical research regulatory coordinator in 2016, after graduating from Brown University with a B.S. in neuroscience. She is GCP and BLS (CPR and AED) certified, HIPAA trained, and currently pursuing a medical degree.
She has a passion for global health, serving at-risk populations, and has traveled internationally to conduct research on tropical diseases for the National Institutes of Health. Idara has conducted epigenetic research on at-risk children and her extensive research on stroke has been published in the journal, Stroke.
In her spare time Idara enjoys singing—she sang the national anthem for the Golden State Warriors Basketball Team.
Nicole Powers, B.S.
Lead Clinical Research Coordinator
As the lead clinical research coordinator, Nicole works directly with MedVadis Research volunteers, pharmaceutical companies, and contract research organizations. Nicole has worked on a variety of MedVadis studies that include diabetic neuropathy, asthma, fibromyalgia, and several migraine clinical trials.
Nicole has been with Medvadis Research since 2014, the same year she graduated from Worcester State University with a B.S. in psychology. She is GCP and BLS (CPR and AED) certified as well as trained; certified in IATA, C-SSRS, iMedidata, and other clinical databases. Nicole is currently pursuing a nursing degree to be completed in 2018.
When Nicole has free time she enjoys volunteering, spending time with family and friends, and participating in road races.
Silpa Mohapatra, B.S.
Clinical Research Coordinator
As a clinical research coordinator, Silpa works directly with all the MedVadis Research volunteers. Silpa joined the MedVadis team in 2017 after graduating from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a B.S. in biology. She is GCP and BLS (CPR and AED) certified as well as trained; certified in HIPAA, IATA, C-SSRS, iMedidata, and other clinical databases. Silpa is also EMS certified and currently works as an EMT. During her time off, Silpa enjoys spending time with family and friends and trying new coffee.
Pankti Patel, B.S.
Clinical Research Coordinator
Pankti joined MedVadis Research in 2016 as a clinical research coordinator; she works with pharmaceutical companies, Medvadis Research volunteers and contract research organizations. She has worked on various migraine studies ranging from frequent to chronic migraine. Pankti is trained and certified in IATA, C-SSRS, iMedidata, Oracle, and other clinical databases. In 2015 Pankti graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a B.S. in neuroscience; she’s currently pursuing a master’s degree in public health epidemiology to be completed in 2018. During her free time, Pankti is a part-time event coordinator who also enjoys volunteering and working with health organizations.
Maria K.B. Spierings
Maria Spierings is the executive director of MedVadis Research. Her responsibilities include overseeing all financial transactions, training new administrative and regulatory employees, and ensuring MedVadis Research runs smoothly on a daily basis. Maria earned a master’s degree in linguistics from Utrecht University in The Netherlands; she’s trilingual with working knowledge of three additional languages. When Maria takes time to relax, she enjoys reading, exercising, and playing the piano.
Angelo Termine, M.S.M., M.B.A., C.C.R.C., C.C.R.A., C.R.C.P.
Angelo Termine oversees all business aspects of MedVadis Research since becoming the director in 2014. Angelo is simultaneously the president and CEO of Ki Health Partners, LLC., a Connecticut-based company he cofounded with Dr. Peter McAllister in 2014. Ki Health Partners is a parent company that owns New England Institute for Neurology and Headache, New England Institute for Clinical Research, and Ki Clinical Research, which has 11 sites nationwide. He is also certified as a clinical research associate, clinical research coordinator, and clinical research contract professional.
Angelo has a B.S. in psychobiology from Quinnipiac University and two master’s degrees in science management and business administration from Albertus Magnus College. Angelo launched his medical research career working at Yale School of Medicine’s Psychiatry Department and has more than 20 years of clinical research experience that includes over 300 clinical trials.
Angelo is a member of MAGI (Models Agreements and Guidelines International) as well as of the Headache Cooperative of New England. He lectures extensively on clinical research throughout the country and has coauthored numerous scientific papers.
